If you lose the ilok, you have to buy another one, but there is a limited number of times that you can transfer your products. 2nd, you depend on an ILOK key, which has to be setup and registered under not only east wests site but iloks specific website which may or may not be there in the future. Kontakt runs MUCH more slowly for me, and since it's not tailor-made for East/West libraries, it may have a lot of settings that you don't need. Its interface, however, I find extremely good, and I prefer it way more over Kontakt. That's not to say it's a gltichy engine though. According to what I heard, Cubase runs more smoothly with East/West than FL Studio does. This is true, especially if you use FL Studio. Plus, it does give you added protection - it makes it much harder for people to steal your product keys because they're attached to a physical piece of equipment.įirstly, you may find problems getting east wests play engine to work properly in your DAW. I agree that the iLok is a bit pricey for what it is offering, but you can stack licenses on them. You can get 8 GB of ram for $40 bucks! I've been using the PLAY reverb in my mixes almost exclusively now, and I can only get about 25-30 instances of the reverb loaded before my Core i5 2500k starts to buckle. At this point, I'd say processing power is more important for those libraries (excluding Hollywood Strings/Brass) if you're planning on using the reverb. Hell, I'd even go as far as saying if you're going to upgrade, might as well jump to 8 or 16 gig.

Granted, that was the old Kontakt version. I NEVER ran into ram issues when I upgraded that old system to 3 GB of ram, even if I added in some resource-heavy Symphonic Choirs. I remember running the library just fine with 1 GB of RAM and a single core Athlon 64 back in 2005 - and those were moderately big projects (20+ instruments loaded). 5 or 6 years ago, people were recommending 1 GB of RAM to use EWQLSO Gold (or 2, if you could afford it).
I think it's somewhere in the $70 - $100 range. I can't recall its exact price, but with shipping, VAT, etc. You put all your East/West licences on it and you have to keep it plugged in to your computer (it's USB) whenever you use East/West, or else it won't work.
They don't make it that clear when you buy it since it doesn't come with your purchase, but the iLok key is needed if you want to ever use East/West. I'd recommend a hard disk with at least 7200 rpm, 4 GB of RAM, a 64-bit OS, and a decent dual-core or quad-core CPU.Ģ.) An iLok key. Three things you DO need, however:ġ.) Good specs.
